Any chance you could try the konqueror browser?  Apple chose it 
(rendering engine) for Safari over the mozilla (gecko engine) and has 
been making tremendous speed improvements to it and given it back to 
the OpenSource tree...  I'm sure a compile of it on Linux would be 
relatively easy to try out.

Safari is easily twice as fast as Mozilla on my machine. Camino 
(mozilla branch) is almost as fast as Safari is but I suspect its 
because they are using Cocoa as the front-end like Apple is for 
Safari...  IE on the Mac is terribly slow and lives in my Trash can now.
