Seven Digital Deadly Sins
Today's site, a collaboration between the National Film Board of Canada and the
British newspaper, The Guardian, offers this award-winning presentation. Gentle
Subscribers will discover a thought-provoking and challenging film exploring
life in the Digital Age.
"Pride, lust, greed, gluttony, envy, wrath, and sloth -- the seven deadly sins
have been with us for hundreds of years. Today's digital world brings with it a
whole new set of moral dilemmas. From the greed-driven world of the high
frequency trader to the envy of the anonymous troll, from the Instagram food
bore to the dad who e-spies on his kids, this interactive documentary looks at
how technology is reshaping our beliefs and everyday lives." - from the website
This engaging documentary encompasses straightforward video clips of public
figures discussing a specific digital sin. Canadian actress Mary Walsh does an
entertaining turn on Envy, while writer Gary Shteyngart and his long-haired
dachshund do an amusing riff on Pride. Interactive elements include visitor
participation to absolve or condemn a number of common digital activities.
Background music accompanies various segments of the documentary, particularly
through a series of fascinating stories. These range from a confession of cyber
bullying, to an account of public shaming, to a famously viral, extravagant
online wedding invitation which had morphed into a timeline of events on how
the happy couple arrived at the altar.
