Site of the Day for Tuesday, March 31, 2009 Q-Dir File Manager - Software of the Month One of the more pedestrian categories of software comes under the heading of hard drive management and organization. This month's freeware application for the Window's platform, from programmer Hrg Nenad at "SoftwareOK", delves into that particular aspect with Q-Dir File Manager, a program whose primary focus is user customization. From its first launch, this is an application which gives the unmistakable impression of software created with painstaking care. Instead of burrowing its way into the registry, this extremely modest-sized application, which arrives as a 250kb zip file, offers the standard functionality of file management programs, while keeping itself to itself with an .ini file in its main directory, to store all user configuration settings. Tossed in for added functionality is a handy little screen magnifier, located in the upper right corner of the window, while another user-friendly touch is the information highlighted in the "tip" window which pops up with a mouseover of files and folders. Delivering a virtual overkill of customization choices, the user can opt for one of more than a dozen presentation layouts, catering to almost every preference in information display, including none at all, and within easy reach from icons at the top of the main window. Various file types appear in their own specific colorway, which can be user determined, making it easy to pick out an .exe file from an .avi without squinting for the end notation. The tree directory panel goes one step further than is usual by highlighting a selected directory in one of the other panels in a contrasting color. Instead of the hit or miss presentation of the main window when the program is reopened, the user can specify exactly how the program's window will appear when it is launched again. In addition to the typical settings of this type of application , Q-Dir File Manager allows the user to specify "favorite" files, and to designate files through its "quick link" management system. Available in ten languages, the program emphasizes extreme customization in a tidy package, although its stylish default appearance may be sufficient razzmatazz for many.
