        Oudry's Painted Menagerie

Today's site, from the Getty Center Exhibitions, offers a presentation on
the renowned artist, Jean-Baptiste Oudry, whose fame rests on his stirring
depictions of wild animals, prompted by the reappearance of two of his
noteworthy paintings. Gentle Subscribers will find a compelling exhibit of
the works of this eighteenth century painter.

"This exhibition is the result of an international collaboration of
conservators, curators, and art historians. The project was born in
Schwerin, Germany, in 2001, upon the reemergence of two enormous canvases
by French artist Jean-Baptiste Oudry (1686 --1755) -- one depicting a lion,
the other a rhinoceros. These paintings, [have] not [been] seen in public
for more than 150 years ... Oudry's Painted Menagerie reunites them with a
suite of other life-size portraits of exotic animals painted by Oudry and
presents a selection of Oudry's drawings as well as contemporary decorative
arts." - from the website

The site provides a gallery walk-through of a number of Oudry's paintings
in the King's Zoo, along with Animal Studies and a section devoted to
Rhino-mania. Featured at the site is an audio presentation about the animal
portraits. In addition to the artistic works displayed, biographical
information about Oudry's life and work, and conservation details about the
restoration of two of his notable canvases are also available in the
Overview section. Visitors may enjoy testing their attention to detail by
taking the Menagerie Switch challenge.
