        Beyond Discovery

Sadly, the Site of the Day "Greatest Engineering Achievements of the 20th
Century" seems to have either vanished into the ether or is perhaps
temporarily down. Thanks to all the gentle members who have reported this
to the List.

In its place, the List presents an equally interesting site, "Beyond
Discovery" which chronicles how recent breakthroughs in the realm of
science have had unexpected positive consequences.

"Beyond Discovery: The Path from Research to Human Benefit is a series of
articles that trace the origins of important recent technological and
medical advances. Each story reveals the crucial role played by basic
science, the applications of which could not have been anticipated at the
time the original research was conducted." - from the website

From global positioning systems to MRI's, to unlocking the secret of how
nitroglycerin aids the body, to the advances made in curing childhood
leukemia, this site offers a fascinating look at how scientific discoveries
in one area went on to help solve mysteries in another.

Leap to the website for some truly fascinating background on discoveries
which have changed our lives at:
