Site of the Day for Wednesday, June 30, 2004 SimpleOCR - Software of the Month With the availability of low cost scanners, many computer users have added this functional hardware to their home systems. While it may be used primarily for image scanning, its ability to eliminate the tedium of typing a print document is not to be overlooked. One of the few and possibly the best of the freeware OCR - optical character recognition - programs is SimpleOCR, for the Windows platform, which is free for non-commercial use. SimpleOCR, based on WOCAR by Cyril Cambien, performs both English and French language recognition. With an extensive dictionary of over 100,000 words and the essential ability to add additional words, the program claims to approach 99% accuracy. The application features a "Despeckle" capability to improve the quality of scans of "noisy documents". A particularly handy option is the application's ability to either include or omit document images or to limit OCR to a user defined area. The text editor highlights any suspect words, making minor corrections less of headache. SimpleOCR will handle input from fully compliant TWAIN scanners as well as TIFF files. Its output can be saved in text format, both TXT and RTF and from there, imported into anything from an HTML editor to a word processing program to an e-mail client. The program is compatible with Windows, from 95 to XP. Skip over to the site for screenshots and the download load link at: http://www.simpleocr.com/Info.asp A.M.
