Site of the Day for Wednesday, June 22, 2005 Clear Sky Clock With the launch and current uncertainty of the disposition of the Cosmos 1 satellite (whose website was past featured as a Site of the Day), many long term Gentle Subscribers may be keeping an eye trained heavenward. To aid their satellite watch, today's site, from Attilla Danko, with the assistance of Canadian meteorologist Allan Rahill, provides essential information on determining when the night sky offers clear viewing conditions. "What is it? ... It's an attempt to show at a glance when, in the next 48 hours, we might expect clear and dark skies for one of many observing sites ... It's is specifically intended for amateur astronomers. The forecast data comes from a numerical weather model run by those very cool guys at the Canadian Meteorological Centre. ... Are there Clocks for other locations? Yes, hundreds. The coverage area is Canada, USA and parts of Mexico." - from the website The site offers data on not only major centers but on out-of-the-way locales from Alberta to Wyoming; those living more than 15 miles from a current clock may request data for their locations. The more than 2000 clocks are searchable by keyword, longitude and latitude position, map and are browsable as well. The data is presented as a large colored diagram with an explanation of the color coding for ground and sky conditions, including the essentials of cloud cover, transparency, a calibrated darkness scale and seeing levels in relation to each hour. Specific clock locations offer direct links to a light pollution map of the area, among other relevant sky watching topics.
