        Zoonotic Diseases

From the folks at the WhyFiles comes a riveting presentation on zoonosis, a
term which may become a household word. Gentle Members may not realize that
they are already too familiar with the concept behind this term, which
refers to the transmission of animal diseases to humans.

"West Nile fever is back in force. SARS lurks in pockets worldwide, and the
superflu could strike anytime. AIDS is everywhere. . . In recent decades,
emerging diseases have cast a wide net of fear. But where do new infections
come from, and how do they break into human populations? . . . Two-thirds
of all infectious diseases, including those mentioned above, spread to
people from other animals. Some scientists say these maladies -- known as
zoonotic diseases -- are a growing threat. . . Zoonotic diseases go global
. . . The big ones . . . Inside Pandora's box . . . What lurks in your
terrarium? " - from the website

The site offers explanations from scientists on the reasons for the spread
of zoonotic diseases and a brief history of some of the major outbreaks in
this disease category, including the "Black Death", AIDS, influenza,
Hantavirus and Ebola, along with their chilling death statistics. The site
also explores a number of zoonotic diseases which have the potential for
wide scale mortality, among which are Lassa fever and Rift Valley fever.
The concluding section covers diseases which may be spread by household
pets and ways to prevent such occurrences.
