Site of the Day for Friday, January 9, 2004 Banished Word List 2004 (For Mis-Use, Over-Use and General Uselessness) The annual list of words which should be banished from use from Lake Superior State University is a favorite of many Gentle Subscribers. The 2004 List has been released and contains selections which have unceasingly annoyed sensitive minds over the past year. "LSSU has been compiling the list since 1976, choosing from nominations sent from around the world. This year, words and phrases were pulled from more than 5,000 nominations - a record. ... Word-watchers pull nominations throughout the year from everyday speech, as well as from the news, fields of education, technology, advertising, politics, and more. A committee gathers the entries and chooses the best in December." - from the website For an amusing stroll through past egregious word use, the website also provides the complete compilation of all banished words in alphabetical order since the list's inception with the date of its inclusion and the background on each word.
