Internet Bird Collection
With the annual fall bird migration in full swing in North America, today's
site taps into one of the premiere bird resources online. Gentle Subscribers
will discover an exceptional publication closing in on its lofty goal to be a
definitive reference for all the bird species in the world.
"The Internet Bird Collection (IBC) is a non-profit endeavour with the ultimate
goal of disseminating knowledge about the world's avifauna ... Videos, photos
and sounds of all the birds of the world ... Explore the most recent materials;
filter by family, search keywords and further customize to your interests" -
from the website
This noteworthy project has thus far racked up an impressive list of statistics
-- more than 80% of the world's bird species with videos, close to 95% with
photos, and 60% with sounds. Using the accepted standard for taxonomy -- from
The Handbook of the Birds of the World and the BirdLife International
Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World -- the project seeks to provide
biological information, such feeding, breeding, and geographical range, along
with the always important birdsong or sounds for each species, and eventually
cover sub-species as well. Remarkably well-designed, the individual bird pages
include maps, geographic information, common and taxonomic names, and the
contributor / photographer.
