Hall of Jades: All About Jades

Today's site, from Chicago's Field Museum, presents an exhibit showcasing the
significance of jade to the Chinese people. Gentle Subscribers will discover a
brief but interesting exhibition composed of elements from the museum's
extensive
permanent jade collection.

"For more than eight thousand years, people in China have treasured jade. ...
Jade
has meant many things to many people. Its luminous beauty and extraordinary
durability have inspired cultures throughout history to invest it with meaning.
...
In China, the meanings have persisted for ages. Since the dawn of this vast
nation?s history, jade has represented prosperity, virtue, and power. ...
Explore
the story of jade, and learn about an ancient land and its most potent symbol."

The exhibit offers a variety of material on jade, from the surprising fact that
two
types of minerals are popularly called jade, to the many different colors of the
stone. Additional information reveals where the stone can be found, along with
its
historic uses, and how the mineral is worked. A highlight of the exhibit
features a
photo gallery, which not only displays some of the many striking jade artefacts
in
the museum's collection but also places these pieces in historical context, from
neolithic to modern day China, with enlargeable images accompanied by brief
commentaries.
