100 Words - That All High School Graduates and their Parents Should Know

The List offers a little site from the Houghton Mifflin Company which
presents a list of 100 essential words which ought to be part of everyone's
vocabulary. Gentle Members, idly wondering if their adolescent offspring
meet the general criteria for competent literacy, may be interested in
reviewing this website.

"In response to parents' misgivings over the quality of their children's
education, the editors of "The American Heritage College Dictionary" have
compiled a list of 100 words they recommend each high school graduate
should know. . . 'The words we suggest,' says The American Heritage College
Dictionary senior editor Steven Kleinedler, 'are not meant to be exhaustive
but are a benchmark against which graduates and their parents can measure
themselves. If you are able to use these words correctly, you are likely to
have a superior command of the language.' " - from the website

The site has divided the list into four alphabetical groups and contain
such indispensable words as auspicious, hubris, nonsectarian and xenophobe,
complete with pronunciation guides, including audio, and definitions. If
Gentle Members enjoy playing "Word of the Week" at the dinner table, this
site provides an excellent source for words to use.
