EditPad Lite 7.6.4 - Software of the Month
This month's freeware, part of an ever continuing search for the perfect but
modest text editor, shines a light on one of the long running, stalwart
programs of the genre. EditPad Lite was originally produced back in 2000 by Jan
Goyvaerts and his Just Great Software company. Constantly updated with the
latest release earlier this month, it has long been a favorite of coders but
has a legion of ordinary fans as well who simply need a reliable text editor.
The application works on any flavor of Windows from XP to 10.
With its tabbed interface, the program can handle an apparently impressive
number of files, limited only by the processing power and RAM of the computer
itself, while it offers a remarkably detailed and customizable search and
replace facility including an array of 'regular expressions'. Text, HTML, and
an 'unspecified file type' as selected by the user, can be created, along with
various options to personalize the interface. A default setting of saving work
every 5 minutes can be altered by the user and backup copies can be configured
as well.
Among the convenient features of EditPad Lite is the inclusion of a Character
Map under the View menu to access non-standard keyboard items and a useful Clip
Collection to hold boilerplate text; line numbering and alphabetized sorting
are also available. Its extensive Undo facility will even roll back saved text
as long as the file remains open.
EditPad Lite fits the criterion of compact (the download is slightly over 9 MB)
and while not perfect -- there's no spelling checker in the freeware version
and previously opened files in tabs are not loaded by default -- it does tick a
number of useful boxes. For those wincing at the prospect of adding yet another
wrinkle to the registry, the program can also be installed on a USB drive,
leaving the computer virtually untouched.
