Site of the Day for Wednesday, December 11, 2002 Investigating the Renaissance The List offers an informative site, one of Harvard University's art museums, designed to demonstrate the discoveries being made on the paintings of the old masters using current technology. If the opening pages of this site appear at first glance to be less than riveting, Gentle Members may find themselves pleasantly surprised by the graphical presentations within. "This web site is an adaptation of the computer kiosk which accompanies the exhibition "Investigating the Renaissance," currently on view in the Fogg Art Museum. . . Computers and new imaging technologies are fast becoming an integral part of the work of conservation. . . This interactive program demonstrates the ways in which computer technology can be harnessed to add to our knowledge about Renaissance paintings and how they were made. . . Computer-assisted imaging can reveal aspects of the process of making art not visible to the unaided eye. It also reveals the alterations of intervening centuries, alterations that were intended to repair the ravages of time and use, and to adjust images to reflect changing aesthetic preferences." - from the website The site, which is dependent on the most recent Flash plug-in to display its presentations, includes an analysis using infrared, ultraviolet and x-rays on selected Renaissance paintings. Information which can gleaned from the reverse of a painting is included as well as a graphical example of cleaning and restoration.
