Site of the Day for Wednesday, December 11, 2002

        Agbios

The List offers an extensive website dealing with the controversial topic
of biotechnology from Agbios, a Canadian firm which provides regulatory and
risk assessment expertise in this field. Gentle Members may take the modest
statement from the webpage cited below with a grain of salt since this
website presentation goes well beyond anything which could be described as
basic.

"Our Website offers basic information about plants with novel traits,
including genetically engineered crop species. We also provide other
general agricultural biotechnology related information as well as links to
related world-wide-web resources on this topic." - from the website

This heavyweight site offers a searchable biotech crop database which
provides safety information on genetically modified crops which have
received regulatory approval in the U.S. and Canada, a section on
principles and practice of environmental safety assessment of transgenic
plants covering gene transfer to related and unrelated organisms and insect
resistance management, a section devoted to principles and practice of
"novel" food safety assessment, a reference database of over 1400
citations dealing with genetically modified organisms and a section on the
regulation of agricultural biotechnology products including governmental
(U.S. and Canada) regulatory approaches and access to specific policy and
guideline documents.

This site, as a whole, would be of interest primarily to students and
officials in the area of biotechnology or those belonging to
non-governmental groups concerned with the issue of genetically modified
organisms. However, the outstanding depth of coverage which has been made
available to the general public at this site makes it suitable as an almost
definitive reference.

The site does include a constantly updated news section relating to
biotechnology which may be of more interest to the casual visitor.
