Site of the Day for Friday, November 30, 2007 BoldFinger 1.0: Software of the Month This month's software for the Windows platform heralds a nifty solution for dealing with the fractious Caps Lock key. A legacy from the days when most software code was written in capital letters, its prominent location lingers on, a perpetual annoyance to many. A quick search for a fix reveals too many results involving screwdrivers, manhandling the Registry or 404's. A more intensive hunt, however, uncovered a little utility developed in 2003 and still going strong. BoldFinger 1.0, from programmers Duncan Heathfield of World in a Box and Sofus Mortensen of Lambda Soft, provides an elegant answer for most iterations of Windows, from 95 to XP. This tiny program, weighing in at 36kb, promises to leave the Registry severely alone and eschews dependence on any support libraries. It works by intercepting a Caps Lock keypress and cancelling it. Should the user have a compelling reason to use the Caps Lock key, it can be engaged by using a combination keystroke -- Alt+ Caps Lock -- to toggle it off and on. Placing a shortcut to the utility in the StartUp folder will have it load at bootup and its system tray icon allows the user to easily shut it down. It also keeps track of the number of accidental Caps Lock hits it intercepts, which are revealed by mousing over the icon.
