        Anzac Day

From the Ministry for Culture and Heritage in New Zealand comes this
evocative website memorializing veterans and those fallen in war. Also a
day of solemn observance in Australia, Anzac Day's roots lie in the
horrific casualties which these countries suffered at Gallipoli in World
War I. Of particular interest to Gentle Members in the Antipodes, this
site's intrinsic merit makes it suitable for all.

"Anzac Day in New Zealand is held on 25 April each year to commemorate New
Zealanders killed in war and to honour returned servicemen and women. . .
The ceremony itself has been continually adapted to the times, but has also
steadily acquired extra layers of symbolism and meaning. . . Anzac Day
continues to enjoy unusual reverence in a country where emotional public
rituals are otherwise absent. It has come to celebrate values that many New
Zealanders consider either distinctive or admirable about their nation --
mateship, unity, courage, self-sacrifice, loyalty -- in addition to its
traditional commemorative function. " - from the website

The site describes the evolution of Anzac Day, an explanation of the term,
an excellent overview of the Battle of Gallipoli, biographies, photos from
the battlefield and memorials in Turkey and paintings from the National
Collection of War Art in Wellington, New Zealand.
