The Proceedings of the Old Bailey London 1674 to 1834

Among the websites featuring original historical sources is this remarkable
project to present online the cases of London's most famous court - the Old
Bailey. This is a joint undertaking of the Universities of Sheffield and
Hertfordshire. Ardent fans of John Mortimer's "Rumple", as well as history
buffs in general, will applaud this site.

"A fully searchable online edition of the largest body of texts detailing
the lives of non-elite people ever published, containing accounts of over
100,000 criminal trials held at London's central criminal court. . . Now
available: 22,000 trials, from December 1714 to December 1759." - from the
website

The site has a comprehensive relational database so that cases may be
searched by keyword, date, name, place, crime, verdict and punishment.
Gentle Members who have encountered quantities of data without such a
facility may be resoundingly cheered by this feature alone. One of the
highlights of the site is its "On this Day" featuring a specific court case
from the current collection. In addition, the site offers an historical
background of London and its hinterland, community histories and the Old
Barley Courthouse. This noteworthy site is both vast and fascinating; more
than one visit may be in order.
