[sopvid] Re: SOPVID Membership Discussion

Dear Colleagues

Victor's counsel on the matter of elligibility for membership is
opportune, considering that he actually facilitated the registration
of our society. If we totally remove minimum qualifications for
membership, we might unintentionally convert ourselves into a
grassroots organisation, and then the false accusation that we seek to
rival the Kenya Union of the Blind would finally be true.

Juma, you said you thought SOPVID membership required one to have the
minimum of a first degree. I have looked through our constitution, but
found no such provision.

If my memory serves me right, during the formation of the society we
took the view that we wanted to encourage professional excellence, but
also took cognisance of the fact that we needed to mentor
non-professionals, thus the provision for associate membership.
Consequently, in practice, we have operated on the basis that our aim
is professional excellence, but we also welcome people with
post-secondary training of any kind among us.

We also noted that SOPVID is not a typical professional association,
because such an association is usually made up of people with
professional qualifications in one area. To such bodies are the
Institution of Engineers of Kenya and the Law Society of Kenya. In our
case we decided to form one professional body for all of us to make
our voice more audible. Thus in addition to SOPVID, we must
individually join the professional societies relevant to our areas of
training to further sharpen our professional skills and refine our
professional profiles.

Let the dialogue continue!
