It should work as you described. What happens if you wait before pressing
space a second time?

Subject: [sib-access] Entering lyrics

guys,
I'm having a weird situation where writing a melisma doesn't always seem
to work. I always thought that if you type a syllable and then hit the
space bar twice, a dash should appear under the succeeding note indicating
that the previous syllable is extended. However, this doesn't work
reliably. When I can get it to work, it only seems to work when I write a
syllable, exit lyrics so that the syllable is highlighted, then re-enter the
lyrics field at that point and then hit a space bar. What am I doing wrong?
