Steve, due to my former managment not wanting to invest the money for proper simulation software I learned how to use NEC-2 to model these EMI items. NEC-2 costs from 0 to $150. The dominant IC "antenna" was found to be the package operating as a number of electrically short loop antennas. The radiation of microstrip can also be modeled with NEC-2. Connector and module EMI can really be a problem. Connectors can radiate as loop antennas but where they seem to really cause problems is when they excite a module or a cable (with common-mode current) as a monopole or as half of a dipole antenna. This is easily modeled with NEC-2. With some practice all of this becomes quite visible and a look at a system will reveal the potential 'antennas.' Then it is a matter of making the 'antennas' less effective, the antenna excitation devices (connectors) less effective, or reducing the antenna current.
