The RCMP look for dogs that have a high prey drive and prefer a smaller dog
( they would rather lift a 50-60 pound dog over a wall instead of a 100
pound dog)
and they are looking for a healthy dog. right now they have their own
breeding program in Alberta, using mainly Checz. dogs. and for what they use
a dog for, I have to agree with what I see. JMHO
In the past they have used only males , but just recently they have worked a
couple of bitches.

I don't think dog sense is a requirement for a police officer who wants to
handle dogs.
The same thing has happened in the Stockton area. As for the import, most
departments are looking for a square dog, just one of the reasons they claim

Mr. Walter,
I read you article on the "Missing police canine" with growing disbelief
and
disgust this AM. In the order of things that come up in the article:
Why on earth would the police import a dog for $10,000 form the
Netherlands?
(Don't tell me there aren't any well bred, healthy ones here with titles at
both ends of their names, I'm surrounded by a few.)
The next paragraph mentions his "advanced training". Your kidding,
right????? He hasn't mastered "coming when called" yet, something dogs
learn in
puppy kindergarten at all of the local dog clubs. Oh, you must mean his
bomb
sniffing abilities. Advanced? Not really. Find a scent, get the toy.
It's a
game. Easy, easy, easy with these dogs! The people who trained and sold
this
dog are laughing all the way to the bank! (I'll bet the tax payers
aren't.)
Perhaps the police department didn't feel a secure fence was a requirement
for officer Reichart's yard before they sent this overpriced, poorly
trained
(doesn't come when called) canine home with him. Funny, on the infrequent
occasions that I breed a litter, I don't let a family take a puppy home if
they
don't have a secure fence!
Finally, when the volunteers and officer (his master???), located the dog
he
"appeared scared and sprinted away", "eventually running into a field with a
four foot fence" that they used as an aid to corner and catch him. A
scared, flighty, poorly trained police dog. Actually the officer's word
was
"confused". Swell. I'm feeling safer, how about you?
In closing, I'm not at all impressed with officer Reichart's "dog sense".
Let's see; no fence, a dog who doesn't come when called, I know, I'll just
not use a leash, then I'll blame his "wandering" on lust. (More likely
deer,
officer Reichart.) The officer need not wait for the spring thaw
(mentioned
in his ridiculous response) to provide a safe, secure area for this
overpriced, poorly trained canine either; Cabellas sells some lovely, SAFE,
SECURE pen
material for those times the officer can't or won't keep his dog leashed
