this medication is used for joint failure and stiffness, decreased or loss of
mobility due to the inflammation, and pain of canine osteoarthritis. The most
common joint conditions in dogs include geriatric arthritis, traumatic joint
injury, hip dysplasia, spondylitis and torn ligaments. Geriatric arthritis is
most common in older dogs, but any of the previously listed can occur in
younger dogs. Visible signs of canine osteoarthritis include but are not
limited to:
        * Any kind of limp
        * Difficulty getting up
        * Loss of interest in activity
        * Decreased activity
        * Difficulty or refusing to go up or down stairs
How Safe Is Adequan Canine?
Adequan Canine has been approved by the FDA when given in the recommended dose.
However, studies of its use in breeding and pregnant dogs have not been done.
Side effects of this medicine have been relatively mild when used in the
correct dose. Like all kinds of medication it is important to ask your
veterinarian for advice on whether it is right for your pet and what would be
the best dosage to start out with.
Side Effects of Adequan Canine
        * Stinging on injection site
        * Upset stomach
        * Vomiting
        * Diarrhea
        * Depression
        * Abnormal bleeding
However, Adequan Canine states that only 5 of 156 tested dogs had mild side
effects and the most common was pain upon injection. The second most common
symptom was an upset stomach. According to one study, it caused low blood
platelet count, which quickly cleared up when the dog was taken off the
medication. Some humans even tested the medication on themselves and reported a
stinging sensation upon injection which quickly cleared u

The vet gave me Adequan for Sassy back in 1995.  I gave her injections for 6
months.  The ball of her left hip socket was resting almost off the socket.  At
the end of the six months, the ball was firmly seated in the hip socket.  I
always wondered why more wasn't done in that manner.  He told us of the giraffe
that wouldn't lift it's head (arthritis) after a series of Adequan injections,
the head was high as ever.

It was rumored that humans bringing in their dogs for the Adequan injections
had help with their arthritis, tool

As there ever been any known side effects from the Adequan injections?

My QH Doodles has been getting Adequan shots for years.  MANY older horses

I know I am coming into this subject late as I have been gone all day
but I have found Adequan shots to really be helpful to dogs with joint
problems.  It was originally used in race horses and very few vets
seems to either know about it or recommend, probably because it is not
a big money maker.  But one of my wonderful vets recommended it to me
years ago for my first GSD who had bad hips and was very arthritic as
she aged.  It is given by injection and although some say it has to
done into the muscle my  vet found the shots worked just as well
subQ.  You give a series of shot once a week for four weeks and then
one a month or whatever works for your dog.  To my knowledge there are
not a lot of side affects and I have used it on several of my old dogs
to relieve pain from arthritis - all with no adverse reactions.  I
have also recommended it to several of my friends and they also found
it to be successful.   On one of my dogs several years ago, I could
tell if I had gone past the one month period as when he jumped on my
bed, he would yelp! Give him a shot and he would be could for another
month.  If you have a vet that will work with you, after the initial
four week series, you can give the shot your self.
