My grandparents coming over from Austria and a family all German I can
know the German's will not get rid of their best GSD's.  If you look at it
though what breeder would sell the best even for that great some of money.
That great sire or dam can not always be replaced since not every dog
can reproduce themselves only the prepotent one can.

The cost of $20,000 is not the price of a top GSD in Germany, take a look at
what Troll, Bernd, Axel, etc. costed years ago.

I grew up around GSD's of family and friends but never owned one until
just over 21 years ago. I have researched the GSD breed all my life obtaining
all books, magazines, German and American. Genetics does repeat itself and the
prepotent
GSD's can reproduce themselves years later.

I took up being a horse breeder over 41 years ago instead of dogs since I am a
person that gets way too attached to their puppies.  I quit breeding horses
when the economy got uncertain since I never wanted any of my horses to end up
in a bad home and when I sold one would take it back if necessary.  I take
breeding a animal as a lifetime commitment as I am sure most on this list do. I
know there are those that will breed 1 Champion to another
to expect a Champion but it does not work that way as I am sure you
and everyone here knows.  If a person does research they will find out there
are lots of GSD's out there but they are in pet homes more than they
are Champions. Doesn't matter if they are in America or Germany not every GSD
as any breeder knows is show protential. You can also add that when a GSD
places at a show it is just a judges opinion for that day.  When a breeder
feels a dog should go to a pet home does not mean that dog should not be able
to be a special dog.  Every dog I have ever bought needed to have correct
conformation, temperament, and match up to what I wanted in a dog.  I grew up
with the GSD looking different than it does today either in Germany or
America.  I have my favorite GSD bloodlines as does everyone else but I need
that dog in my GSD or I will not purchase them.  I do not know about others but
I do wish people would not say that a dog belongs in
a pet home if they don't believe they can place at a dog show.  Yes, showing
is important to some and I showed horses for a good many years but never
believed when I sold a horse it was not a great horse.  I know a horse might be
different but like a dog they have their place in life with the right person. I
made sure when I sold a foal they matched the person's personality and
connected.  The same with a dog I would never buy one unless I felt a
connection to them,  as I did with the few dogs I was a breeder of in the past
to find the right home for them.

I know  even today a few breeders still do use this formula but it still
seems to  make sense that it worked years ago why not  today.

I do know that in the 40s and even in the 50s some of the great German dogs
were sent to America to protect the breed. Lately some of what is being
sold to  Americans is a shame. I have had to sue over some of the "great" dogs
that  people have purchased.

There are dogs being sold from Germany for $20,000 that I would not want to
even put in a pet home.  I am not saying everyone is dishonest, but if
there are Americans willing to pay it, why would not someone take the money
and  laugh all the way to the bank.

Also, the Germans have limited their breed lines too. They can't breed out
of the SV registry, and so they can't come to America to improve what they
need.  Instead some of us try to breed to their lines, and often find a
real problem. The few good ones that were bred seldom produce in the next
generation.

The best of the German lines are not being sent to America.
