Not sure if the rules about flying with a dog as excess baggage is the same as
air cargo but air cargo is a nightmare. I tried earlier this year to ship an
adult bitch to sacramento on United in a 500. They refused to ship her in a 500
and would only ship in a 700. Then they found out the plane couldn't accomodate
a 700 crate so I could not ship. There were no direct flights from Denver to
Reno either, so not sure the worth in trying for a national there, jmo. I
won't fly with a dog unless it is a direct flight. Heck, I can't even stand
changing planes am a nervous wreck when flying with a dog!

Wrong! You do not want to ship a dog in too large of a crate.
Personally, I think that a 700 is too big for most GSDs. Too much
room to "rattle" around in when there's turbulence. Better slightly
too small than too big. I flew GSDs in 500 crates for years. Flew
a 27" male in a 500 several times. However, the airlines are
getting tougher and tougher on size requirements all the time.
The *only thing* requiring a GSD to fly in a 700 is that the tip of
the ears touch the top of the 500 crate. You can actually buy
"risers" so that the ears won't touch the top. A GSD can easily
travel in a 500. It is not too small. A typical sized male can
turn around and lie down in a 500 with ease. That's all the
airlines require besides the ears not touching.

asking, as I have a friend who wants to come to St Louis this
year and she wants to fly...
And,
wasn't there problems with St Louis taking a 500 size last
year, much less a 600 or a 700?

really wants to try to be finished with everything but the
last title leg for her dog's PAM at Nationals but hates to
drive...

With air travel being so
unpredictable why should it be used as a criteria
for a national site? Show sites need to be booked
years in advance. there is absolutely no guarantee
that a hub will remain a hub, or that the airline
that flies direct will even be in existence by the
time a national rolls around. If they haven't
selected a 2017 show site by now there probably
not going to hold a national in the west. This is
7-15 those facilities are booked no less than 2
years in advance.
If they didn't have a vote on a
2017 site at this board meeting there isn't going
to be a rotation it is a simple as that.
Why beat a dead horse.
