There is a breeder that finishes thousands of GSD's, only at all-breed
shows. They have no front. They have no rear. They are clean coming and
going. They can't move out of their own way. They are "pretty" and have lots
of hair. Many all-breed judges love them. Are they correct? In reference
to gait, the Standard mostly describes what should be, not what shouldn't
be. For example, a dog is faulty to the degree that he doesn't move in a
manner that is,".outreaching, elastic, seemingly without effort, smooth and
rhythmic, covering the maximum amount of ground with the minimum number of
steps",etc. In other words, what isn't there that should be is just as bad
as what is there that shouldn't be.

I would tend to agree with you........

however, in defense of NONbreeder judges......
remember how our standard reads (the very last sentence
of the standard): "Faults of gait, whether from front, rear
or side, are to be considered very serious faults.
If we want sidegait to have preference, the standard should
say just that.

Also, there are faults in gait that are just as obvious from the
side as from coming and going.......for example, locked hocks
are just as obvious from observing side gait as well as observing
going away.....as are padding, flipping etc. coming at you.

So, hypothetically speaking, the question is really this:
Can a dog with faults coming and going really have correct gait
from the side????
