Laurie,
I agree with you completely. My husband and I have also "adopted" a junior.
Roni (Veronica) comes and stays with us for part of the summer each year so
that she can go to shows and work with the dogs. She has a dog at home, but
her dog is not interested in the showring, so she has signed onto one of my
dogs who absolutely loves her. I took her to the National in Daytona Beach and
she was hooked. This year we are trying to find a way to get her to the
National as a competitor in junior showmanship so she will stay hooked.

The AKC does require that juniors co-own the dogs they handle, although I do
believe that they can handle (in junior competition) any dog owned by a member
of their immediate family without being a co-owner.
We need to "adopt" interested juniors, put their names on dogs for them to
show,
transport them to dog shows, wait (while everyone else showing GSD's has gone
home) for the junior classes to be judged. Many folks have assumed over the
years that Ariel is my daughter (and, in some ways she is - I get Mother's Day
cards from her) but I met her and her mom when Ariel was 8. They attended my
dog obedience class with their sheltie. Ariel began traveling to dog shows
with me as a young teenageer. I put Ariel on as co-owner of two of my chamion
GSD males - Ch Windy Acres' Free and Easy was Ariel's first junior show dog.
When he died, I put her name on Ch Windy Acres' Ami of Riverdell TC. Ariel's
family never owned a German Shepherd while she was competing in juniors. My
all-breed handlers were very gracious about coaching her (thank you Freddy
Olson and Chip Rayner) and she had a lot of natural talent. Now she's hooked
and will be, without a doubt, a lifelong participant in dogs with a special
interest in the German Shepherd Dog.
If everyone of us adopted an "Ariel" the future of our sport would be
assured...
