Can't say that I put much stock in ring experience. Ring "control" (whatever that really is" certainly doesn't come even close to the ability to find the right dogs. AKC stresses ring procedure over actual placing of dogs, then allows approximately two minutes for evaluation of each dog after considering checking armbands, marking the book, noting absentees, winners, etc, Yes, most AB judges have vast experience in ring procedure but have no clue for finding the right GSD. It's quite often a crap shoot. I watched last week when a judge found a really good dog for WD, then pointed to one of the worst there for WB (a major ) He had ring control up the gazoo, but I was left with the feeling that his finding that WD must have been a happy accident considering many of his other placements and some of the good ones who did not place. One of the reasons our specialties are so superior to the ABs it the lack of time restraints ; judges can take the time they need to do their job. There were so many fine animals at the national, many more than could be recognized with an award. That kind of judging takes time.
