Hi Jackie;
It's odd that you use that drawing of your ideal along with your quotes....as
that dog
does not have a " straight back" as the croup is higher than the back itself,
and it
has
a short steep croup that DEFINITELY "heads south for the winter"........nor
is the
thigh close to a right angle as quoted and the shoulder is sorely lacking
angulation.
In general this dog would not be my ideal..........and I dislike short necks.
This dog, or drawing could also have a handler pose it in such a way that it
could
lay it's hock on the ground.......it isn't always the dog....it is often just
the
POSE!
There is no problem with the Standard. The problem lies in the fact that
none of us
have yet been able to attain the perfection of the Standard and this drawing is
not
very close either. Many Champions fall short of the Standard.
However......a Judge can only judge or choose what they "interpret" to be
closest
to the Standard according to what is brought in the ring by the handlers and the
Breeders and Exhibitors. The Standard is not at fault and open to
interpretation.
The problem is what Breeders, Exhibitors and even Judges do with it.
Until we bring them perfection......a Judge cannot put up perfection.
Until Judges are perfect......they will often miss the dog closest to the
Standard and
go with what they prefer......( or unfortunately..... who they prefer)
We all TRY......but it's a flawed imperfect sport.
