I wholeheartedly agree with Carolyn on this. I judged a large regional in
conjunction
with their national a number of years ago. The people were great and totally
committed,
but at the time, few of the dogs would have been in any way competitive in one
of our
AKC shows, specialty or all breed. There was one black and tan bitch who was
the
exception; she was lovely (and correct), but could not even be considered for
the top award
because she was black and tan. Do you see a similarity here? Rules ?
I seem to remember back in the 60s that there was a question about health
issues in the
white GSD; don't think anything came of it, but it may have been influential in
the DQ.
There are certainly health issues with other breeds who are not supposed to be
white:
the white collie must have color on the head, the boxer must not be more than
one third
white, Cardigan corgis must have color surrounding the eye, Shelties may not be
more
than half white, etc. Much of this involves deafness, blindness, and
neurological problems.
Also, it is a known fact that white herding dogs are not respected by
livestock. Now, I
hear you say " how about great Pyrenees and Kuvaz, etc." , and I say to you
these are guardian
dogs who are supposed to blend in with the sheep, not herding dogs. Did
anyone mention function ?

Lloyd Brackett utilized a bitch called Nyx of Longworth.....and she was kind of
an off-white. He paid a price with a lot of white markings on some of his
black and tan dogs too....... and admitted it.
No one has ever condemned those that have stayed true to loving and breeding
the white GSD. There will always be a place for them in the dog world.
You have to admit.......they are more beautiful and correct now. Ever since
they
were DQ'd there has been a steady improvement in them in my opinion.
Might be the best thing that happened to them.....and when they have a litter
they
are WANTED. Many were disposing of whites in their litters before from what
I have heard.
Personally I think they are much better off now. They have their own shows
and
Champions and they have their own Nationals with their own High Awards....and
they are very careful about preserving their dogs and where they are going with
them.
I don't think they have one thing to gain by again being a part of our Standard
again ........and neither do we.........as per sites like Panda Shepherds, etc.

When I started in this sport it was in Michigan. An influencial kennel was
Longworth who had included white in their breeding program for year. For a
while we would end up with white shepherds in the litters, but they were
not bred pure for color.
The white breeders are some of the most dedicated people I have ever met.
They know more about genetics and breeding, (since that is so important for
them), than most of us. They breed very carefully with consideration of
health and problems in the breed.

On the other hand, it is an interesting discussion. I jsut don't know
