In Florida, we had a brush with Katrina last Thursday and Friday. There is damage to houses, some flooding, trees down, some with no power. All of the gasoline for Florida comes from the Gulf refineries, so there is real concern here that there will be no gas. There are long lines at the stations, people are worried and irritable. Today after work I was topping off my tank, happy to have a chance to pay $2.97 per gallon rather than to have no gas at all. I was grumbling about the chaos at the gas station while I waited my turn. The woman in the next car said to me "This is heaven compared to New Orleans..." That was such a profound truth that there was no possible comeback, and I was ashamed to have complained at all - it all pales into insignificance compared to the situation in and near the Mississippi Delta. All Americans who are in a safe place out of reach of the disaster that is Katrina watch with shock and horror what is happening in Louisiana and Mississippi. Entire families trapped and drowned in their attics... people stuck on the roads dying of dehydration, starvation, thirst.... What has happened to the dog people in New Orleans and Biloxi ? What has happened to their dogs ? The nightmare is beyond grasping, beyond imagining. If you are not there and have no family or friends there, say your thanks and prayers to whatever god you pray to, and think of the fact that you have electricity, running water, food, that you are not swamped in filthy, disease-ridden water, that your house is not destroyed, that your dogs are safe and dry, that your family and friends are safe and dry. If you are not there, find some way to help. They need EVERYTHING. Food, water, clothing, medicine, diapers, dog food, foster homes, crates, blankets. You can't go there - but you can send help. Please do - while you give thanks that you are not there, and please pray for those who are trapped there. Showgsd-l had been holding onto the last of the funds raised from last year's Rescue Raffle in anticipation of the 2005 Hurricane season. It goes without saying that all of what is left will be sent to assist in GSD Rescue in Louisiana and Mississippi. While we are happy to contribute the List's small, annual ad hoc effort to raise funds for rescue, which also results in a good time evening for those who attend the List Party and Raffle, we are so sorry that the need for rescue exists at all, and that the need is so much greater now than the always huge need that is there always. There is nothing we can possibly do that will be enough, no matter how much it is. Please make sure to give thanks that you and yours are not there. Then, please do what you can for those who are. Earlier, several people posted information and details concerning rescues at and near "ground zero" and rescue facilities. I am reposting those five emails below for those who missed them, covering 8 different potential sources of donations. Please feel free to add to this list - I am sure there are many others. The facilities and volunteers need your help. Donate to AGSRA, donate to the local groups and rescues of you choice. Follow your preferences and inclinations, but please make sure to help. There is no limit to what is needed, no point in a turf war about where to send your donations - it is a bottmless pit of horror, need and desperation. There is simply no limit to how much help they need from all of us. I have contacted the feed store I buy food from who have taken several bags of dog food and cat food to the shelter. We have bought and taken some food in also and John is contacting local businesses for support. The ones that have come our way, so far we are managing to assist with. Anyone in the Beaumont area wishing to assist, contact the Human Society direct and they will tell you what their further needs are. Anyone wishing to send financial support can send to myself, care of the GSDC of Beaumont earmarked for assistance to hurricane animals in our area. Contact me privately for address. Thank you. Please just let all members know that we have opened a pet shelter at Blackham Coliseum in Lafayette, right next to the Cajundome. Evacuees may bring their pets their for housing. We have PLENTY of food, water, crates, cages, bedding and newspaper. BUT the owners are responsible for feeding, watering, walking and medicating their own pets. Interested parties may call Lafayette Parish Animal Control at 337-291-5644 for more information. Also many area vets are accepting animals right now, until they fill up. Get the Yellow Pages out! Please help me to get this word out. I've been working non-stop! THANKS! I am Diane Roberts, a long time list member. As most of you know, I operate Tampa Bay German Shepherd Rescue. My operations during the hurricanes of last year as well as Andrew in the early '90s has given me some insight into the issues that will face the breed rescues in the impacted area as well as the surrounding areas. The New Orleans GSD Rescue, Inc (501C-3) has evacuated all their dogs but until they know if they will have homes themselves when this is over they can't do anything. I will be in contact with them and keep the list updated. New Orleans German Shepherd Rescue New Orleans, LA Email: adoption@xxxxxxxxx www.nogsr.org <outbind://52/www.nogsr.org> They are already asking for long term foster homes (they have been the godsend for the FL hurricanes as I have been able to keep families together with their GSD's). New Orleans GSD Rescue works with the local Animal Controls, Humane Societies and SPCA's which have evacuated their animals to surrounding states (mostly TX) but will fill up rapidly. ------------- Margery Golant mgolant@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ============================================================================ POST is Copyrighted 2005.
