Doris E Please don't do that... unless, of course, you WANT to get a tick-bourne disease!! Hurting the tick will cause it to spit up even more possibly infective saliva into the wound. Honestly, I'm not even sure that a tick CAN just simply "back out" because, once attached, a tick builds a sort of cement around itself and the opening of the bite which secures the tick firmly to the body of whatever critter it's feeding on. The best way to remove a tick is the grasp it as close to the surface of the skin as possible and use a gentle but constant pressure to pull the tick out. Some people add a slight twisting motion, but I've found that a gentle and constant pressure straight out will yield the best results. Most of the time, you'll get the head and all. But if you don't, no worries. Your (and your dogs') bodies will expel the head like they would with any other foreign body. Clean the resulting wound. I usually follow up with a swipe of rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball. It should go without saying, but... after you're done handling a tick, always remember to WASH YOUR HANDS WELL with lots of soap and water!! I always add a squirt of hand sanitizer too, just for good measure. -- Karen C.
