Other than I like the small shows, I have to agree with Sally.
When I judge, my problem is which of the great entries do I go with? I
seldom have to find a winner in all those less desired classes. As Lamar
used to say, "How do I find a flower among the weeds?" And he would say that
while facing his entries. I seldom have that problem today.
The quality is better. The males are masculine, the bitches feminine. The
temperament is so much better than it used to be. As is color, size, backs,
and teeth. (Destiny with a number two select and a missing per-molar).
I know no breeder that decides to breed a litter and tries to breed a worse
animal than the parents. We breed to improve the breed, for our own
reasons. We are doing a great job.
When motels were $6.00 a night, (yes, Motel 6 meant $6.00 a night), I was
earning $20,000 a year. When handling fees were $25.00 a class, we could
rent a room, eat three meals, and pay for gas with that $25.00.
Times do change, the fun is still there. The friends are just as close, and
our wins just as important. And, when you do get a champion, it means just
as much.
Then there are a few people with three championships on the same dog, (or
four if you include Grand Champion) like Harley. It must still be fun for
us, or we would not do it.
Not that there is anything wrong with that.
