Many often talk about how the "American bred/ European cross" does
not work or did not work for them. Well
Ya THINK!
Consider that often some breeders go to the German bred dog to correct
a whole lot of problems THEY have in their
own American line that they cannot seem to resolve.....and when things
go 'south'....blame the German dog for the
failure....which always amazes me. Evidently it is never the fault of
the line with all the problems they expect to 'cure'.

Also...many breeders with the problems they are trying to resolve try
to solve it by bringing in German lines that they have
NO IDEA what is good or bad about the background of that dog they
used. ALL lines have some issues. BUT...Not all
dogs from those lines do. Some do carry the problems of the
lines....and some do not. It is lot like a litter where one
parent carries the coat factor, and the other does not. Every pup in
the litter is NOT a carrier....but those that are......well
what do you expect! <G>
IMO a breeder needs to "clean up" the line they are using....or
change direction and get another line of the Breed. Even
that is sometimes pretty difficult.
To go outside to a new line expecting to "clean up" problems you
already have is a waste of years. The reason to go
OUT into another line is to bring in some improvements you need.

I do agree with Ken. He had a beautiful male bred off an European dog.
It was not a German dog, just a non-AKC stud dog.
We have developed an amazing and wonderful German shepherd, American
bred. We started this trend with Lance, (mixed country), and from
there have improved the breed to where we are today.
The American German shepherd is the best in the world, not only for
temperament, movement and style, but also for health issues and just
plain quality. Can it be improved?, of course. We try to do that with
each litter, and are doing a good job.
We allow other countries to breed to our dogs, and the AKC is open and
free, unlike the SV in Germany, or other countries.
I agree with Ken that we should always consider other dogs from other
countries, but not to replace our dogs, but to improve our lines. Evan

course not. Look at the pedigree not the country in which the dog was
born.
