They often seem to find the correctly moving dog (covering the maximum amount of ground with the minimum number of steps) "boring". However, this is the gait that can be sustained for long periods of time - the racer will tire quickly. And, as pointed out in an earlier post - the quick moving racer could never calmly move the sheep. Obviously, JMO Sandy Well said. I personally have all my show dogs herd (when I can get the trainer and location) They also do agility or some other sport. It builds stamina and you will definately know if your dog can move correctly. That said, the same dog who will herd til he/she drops, will poop out in the ring. Why? Nerves, overwhelmed senses, boredom? If anyone has an answer to that, I would love to hear it.
