If you don't give a select or grand champion rating at an all breed show,
are you saying that the dog should not be considered at the group level? Is
that the practical application?

I don't think it is a questions of balls, it is a question of opinions.
And, everyone has one.
So, if you don't give the award, somehow that means you have more
fortitude, (doesn't that sound better than balls?), than the judge whose
opinion
causes him/her to give out four? So, if I understand the post, not giving
out
the award somehow makes you virtuous. Giving it out, means you caved for
your friends.
It is going to be fun to see how this plays out.
