I think the shoulders changed when the judges started putting up the fastest
dog not the best moving dog. We still see that happening in the ring today.
What I find interesting is that the Germans did the same thing but for
different reasons. They wanted a dog to sprint not trot. They wanted a shorter
back so that the dog could sprint faster and hit the sleeve harder. I guess
they didn't think a dog gating gracefully to the sleeve would get much favor
from the judge. Enter the roached back. It did stiffen the back and shorten
the dog. They also lost their beautiful shoulders they had. What I find
interesting is that the Germans who were seriously working their dogs and not
showing in conformation bred closer to their standard. It was the show people
who wanted to change the way the dog looked.

It does make you wonder where we are headed and what the dogs will look like
and how they will move 20 years from now.

Our values change in our breeding programs as we work our dogs in herding or
agility. The dog that is just a little too long in the loin but still wins in
the conformation ring is a real challenge in agility.

Breeders will breed what the judges are rewarding in the conformation ring.
People who compete in herding and agility will buy dogs from breeders with a
history of producing dogs that work. I don't think it is likely to change. :0)

I know when alot of the people have been in the breed 20+
years, and it seems there is a consensus that shoulders are
not what they use to be. I know from my own experience
with seeing some of my mentors old dogs in video and
pictures, I have to agree. From my own research his line
can only be found in 5th/6th Generations. If someone had
his line in the earlier generations, and still breeding, I
would love to see some dogs. Can the people who have been
in the breed for some time, talk about this subject. Maybe
share with the newbies which lines did/still do carry
correct shoulders? Maybe share some pictures/links of dogs
who do have a correct shoulder lay back. I think this
would be educational for all, since as I said before (and I
know many have also) shoulders just do not seem to be what
I have seen in the past (through videos of course :))
