[ SHOWGSD-L ] Service dogs

I wonder.? Guide Dogs for the Blind may be phasing out the GSD.? But, other
agencies are looking at the breed for their clients.? As you may remember, this
is an area that I want to explore when I retire next year.? I have been doing
alot of research on this topic.? I found some interesting trends.? Many of the
older organizations for sight and hearing dogs are using the retrievers.?
However, there is also a demand for poodles for folks who have allergies and
Mini-poodles for those in small apartments.? A newer aspect of service dogs, or
maybe a demand not needed for many years, is for disabled military
personnel.??(This is the area?in which I want to focus)? Anyway, it seems many
of these folks prefer a GSD.??I?did a visit with Charm awhile ago at a local VA
Hospital.? At that time, service dogs weren't really considered.? Things have
changed since then and I have been in correspondence with UCLA to help set up a
program.? This is still in the talking stages but they are tot
ally looking at GSD's as one of the breeds for Vets.??
So, the GSD may be phased out in some areas but?is definately being looked at
in other areas.? Think about it, can you see a military man with a mini-poodle
:-)
