REMEMBER WHEN by Barbara J. Galasso REMEMBER WHEN: someone said a dog had a great shoulder they used GV Judd's as a comparison or if your bloodlines needed hindquarter, you thought of GV Lance? When they said a dog had it on both ends, they might of thought of GV Mannix of Fran-Jo or a typey stylish bitch like GV Charisma? When they said he or she was a great producer, they could very well have been talking about GV Nestles Crunch or Ch. Amber's Flair.
REMEMBER WHEN: the Review was 200 pages long and everyone advertised in it? The Christmas issues were the best. Everyone got in the holiday spirit and the pages were decorated with holly or a wreath. How could anyone forget the Covy Tucker Hill ads with all their famous dogs laying by the fireplace?
REMEMBER WHEN: the National was a three day spectacle and most people could attend? Excitement was high as they watched and applauded for their favorites of the famous dogs and ones who were yet to become famous, the Honor Parade, the Stud Dog and Brood Bitch class, and the highlight of the event, the Selects. The great dogs, the great judges, the great breeders, the great handlers.......they were all there brought together by the same burning desire to display the best of the best bound together in good faith, good sportsmanship and alot of hope.
REMEMBER WHEN: the breeders had a large selection of stud dogs to choose from to breed their bitches to? A canine brucellosis test was all that was required to get your bitch bred to that famous dog, and two services were not unheard of.
REMEMBER WHEN: entries were large, five point majors were common, specialty clubs were thriving, big breeder helped guide the little breeder, shows were fun, you didn't have to work as hard grooming dogs at ring side to get the same winning results and you actually got to see part of the show?
REMEMBER WHEN: time passes by and with each decade a new generation of dogs and breeders are born. New judges, new handlers, the anticipation of the"teach me" novice. But the echoes of the greats who have come and gone leave their shadow to fall across the specialty ring. If you listen in the silence you can still hear the crowd roaring as LaMar threw his hand up in the air to encourage the spectators to clap even more for his beloved "Ironsides". You can see Connie Beckhardt come on the show grounds brushing your cheeck with a kiss hello, and Lorraine Clifford's hearty, friendly laughter...... ever challenging us to follow the footprints they layed as a foundation to the greatness of the German Shepherd Dog in the hopes that as our years go by that we too will have something to leave to the next generation so they can REMEMBER WHEN. ============================================================================ POST is Copyrighted 2005.
