Below is an email that I received from my local kennel club regarding the
proposed Little Falls kennel. This story is all over the newspapers and TV
these days. I personally haven't heard any updates, but I'm sure the outcome
will be well publicized!

FYI
Subject: Help Stop Puppy Mills in Minnesota

You may have recently heard about a proposed 600-dog kennel in Morrison
County, near Little Falls, Minnesota. The owner, Gary McDuffee, also has at
least one other facility in the area; his "Happy Tails" kennel has been cited
for numerous violations by the USDA. The Morrison County commissioners have
approved a conditional use permit that will allow the new kennel, and one of
the conditions is that dogs that will be outdoors be de-barked. The
Minneapolis Star Tribune has run three articles about this, which are worth
reading, if you haven't already (listed from the most recent published):

This is nothing more than a puppy mill, and many of us have been shocked to
find out that they even exist in Minnesota. Short term, the goal is to stop
this particular kennel. You can help in a number of ways. First, sign a
petition that will be sent to the Morrison County commissioners to ask that
the permit be rescinded:

Thousands from across the country have signed it already--please add your
signature!

In addition, send an e-mail to the Morrison County commissioners, telling them
how you feel about this proposed puppy mill, as well as the others that exist
in their district. According to the most recent Star Tribune article, the
commissioners have been inundated with e-mails from all over the country,
protesting their decision. Out of some combination of cowardice and
embarassment, they've removed their e-mail addresses from the county web site.
Don't let them off so easily! Here's the information you need to contact them:

Finally, another way to help is to write a letter to the editor at the Star
Tribune to protest this kennel, and let the public know the difference between
responsible breeders and people such as McDuffee, who operate facilities where
animals live in inhumane conditions and exist solely for breeding purposes,
and produce puppies who have numerous health and behavioral problems due to
haphazard breeding programs and improper or nonexistant socialization.
Encourage them to continue their coverage on this important issue. The e-mail
address is opinion@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Plus, a note of thanks to Paul Levy, the
author of these articles, would also be appropriate: plevy@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

This is just the beginning. We want to use the awareness generated by this
particular kennel to advance legislation in Minnesota that would, ideally,
outlaw puppy mill operations such as this, or at least signficantly restrict
them. We need to make sure that puppies in Minnesota only come from
responsible breeders who raise their animals in caring and humane conditions,
with breeding programs that advance the health and strength of their breeds.
We want happy, healthy and well-socialized puppies that will be wonderful
companions!

So, please help! This is being sent to you as a representative of your
Minnesota-based kennel club. Please send this along to your members and
internet breed groups of interest, and to anybody else you know who loves and
cares about dogs. Together, we can hopefully stop this kennel, and have a
longer-term impact on the welfare of dogs, in general.

Thank you!
Lori Brostrom
