In the first place, the person doing the drawings is very much
against the style of dog wanted in the North American show ring. I find
it difficult to believe that there is no one else around who will draw
the right style of dog. Perhaps there is a problem getting someone to
work for nothing? I say that with only half serious thought...I have
been told that the artist was not to be paid. Perhaps that is untrue.
In any case, having drawings done by someone who states plainly on her
own website that the American style show German Shepherd is useless
except as a pure pet should, all on its own, have prevented the
committee from using this person's work.
What, after all, is the purpose of the Illustrated Standard? One of
the MAIN reasons any club publishes an IS is as an educational tool for
would be and new judges of the breed...at AKC shows--not at Sieger
shows, or WDA shows, or any other shows...just AKC shows! The drawings
in this article are not the kind of dogs anyone I know wants to breed or
to show. If they want that kind of dog they don't want to win in the
AKC...it's as simple as that. Spending thousands of dollars to promote
a dog no serious breeder would keep seems to me (and obviously to many
others) to be a dirty great waste of money.
I guarantee you that if you take these ridiculous drawings to any
(and I do mean any) person coming new to the breed and then take
him/her to a specialty show, he or she is going to think you are
crazy. The pictures show one thing and everybody's breeding and showing
something else. How stupid is that? In addition, 99 out of 100
specialty judges would puke at any dogs who look like those drawings.
If they didn't, they wouldn't get to judge more than once, maybe twice.
If it's true that this IS represents someone's best efforts, then
Sandra is right...somebody else needs a chance to do it right. This one
needs to be scrapped and very speedily thrown into the circular file.
If it took hundreds of hours, they were wasted hours...that's it in a
nutshell.
