[ SHOWGSD-L ] Perianal Fistulas

My 6 ½ year old male shepherd was diagnosed with Perianal Fistulas the
beginning of February 2012. Just prior to taking him to the vet my husband
noticed a streak of blood on the outside of his stool on and off for a
couple of weeks. We took him to our vet and after a complete exam determined
he has them. She treated him with Cefpodoxime, Pepcid AC, Prednisone,
Atopica and Protopic. He has finished the Cefpodoxime and she had us give
him the Pred every day for a month and then every other day for a couple of
weeks and then every third day until last week and now he?s back to one Pred
twice a day and we?re giving him one Pepcid before he gets the Pred. She
added Hepato ? 2 capsules twice a day every 12 hours. This afternoon we
noticed a streak of blood on the stool.
Has anyone gone through this with their dog and used the same stuff we?re
using or used a different treatment? How long did it take to clear up? Our
vet told us she consulted with a specialist who recommended giving him
Hepato. She also mentioned that if found early it can be cleared up in three
or fours months.
In reading the last Showgsd comments, I noticed people are talking about
Solid Gold. I feed my dog Solid Gold Wolf King. Does anyone know if anything
has changed in making this kibble and could this be a problem causing the
fistulas? I don?t have any trouble with him eating it and he has solid
stools.
