There actually are differences. There are a lot more GSDCA AOE's than GSD's
with AKC AOE's. The AKC limits their recipients; the GSDCA does not.
Both AOE's come about with just one judge's opinion. The GSDCA requires more
than just a Select rating; one must have OFA, a working title, etc. The AKC
does not require that, but, other than in 2009, the AKC requires a dog to be in
the top 20 to even be eligible to compete for the AOE.
So, there is a big difference in both AOE's, but, both AOE's are hard-earned,
prestigious awards/titles and something to be really proud of!!

I think they would be happy with an AOE from the GSDCA or the AKC. Not
that there is a big difference.
