I was curious about this breed, just because I love big bear dogs. All the
websites say that the dog was named after Leonberger, a town where they
possibly orginated. It was fascinating. The suggested cross was
Newfoundland
(hence webbed toes), to a St. Bernard. Then later to the Pyrenean Mountain
Dog. This has been disputed, (of course). The standard from the club site
is
a bit different from what Helen wrote, but still the males are BIG! 80-125,
28-31 inches tall. I think I want one! Wouldn't THAT be fun in my widdle
trailer LOL
