But this puppy was one day old. No TIME for anything to "go wrong" so much as
it likely was whelped
something already "wrong". WHAT can a brand new puppy do to 'cause'
mesenteric torsion??? A gut
twisted 6 times? I'm thinking it had to be there at birth? As Morgan
stated...it makes you wonder about
others.
I know that I have heard some Vets believe the mesenteric root is too long on
most of these dogs that
torsions so that it has no strength of support. Once they open them up it is
pretty obviously long...but
then it has been 'stretched' by the torsion. Makes it difficult to know if
it was too loose beforehand so as
to allow the gut to swing and flip.....or the torsion caused the excess length
and looseness?
We do see a lot of GSD that are somewhat "gutty".... I've mentioned this before.
Our Standard says "the bottom line only moderately tucked up in the
loin"......but of course it also says
"abdomen firmly held and not paunchy". I have seen dogs faulted for too much
tuck up....but at the same
time see lots of dogs with a somewhat 'saggy' loin and gut.
Yet again I say.....we are seeing too much length of loin in our
Breed....longer loins and shorter croups.
I am not claiming this IS the reason for torsion....but it IS a concern one way
or other IMO.

I have many articles in magazines, books and vet sites on bloat.
Still believe if there it is in the bloodlines there is a weakness
there just like Cancer and DM.
This one is a interesting article that might explain why some get bloat
and others do not.

mesenteric
root. Wonder if this could be the cause
of so many stillborn and Sudden deaths??
