I see the problem of the illustrated standard as one of how to show the GSD
as it should be judged. This dog is a moving animal, and the serious faults
are faults of movement. You cannot demonstrate movement with an illustration.
You can graph what the movement should be, or draw lines to show what the
standard call for, but all of that can be stated in words, and yet still not
understood.
An illustration is good, but as was pointed out before, a blueprint does not
show you what a home looks like.
We cannot fool ourselves into thinking that if we have a perfect
illustration, all judges will do a perfect job. We have a good standard, we had
a good
illustration, and we still had ignorant judges.
I commend the effort, but I feel we are too far advanced as a club and a
breed to now establish an illustrated standard that will be acceptable to even
a
large majority of this club. We should put our efforts towards education,
and if we believe an illustrated standard will accomplish that, then we should
go for it. But, if we use an inferior illustration, we have to accept that
we cause more harm that good. Does this club think we would have agreed to the
original illustrated standard, were we to be asked to accept it today?
The judges will still judge as they interpret it, as it always has been.
Not that there is anything wrong with that.
