Mom got her first GSD when I was 6. I have spent as little time without one as possible since then. I showed for her as a kid. But as an adult I decided that my second GSD would be well bred. Sadly I took Mom with me to pick out my dog. Now, because she got bit by the show bug all over, I have 6 dogs to care for. It is a lot of work and money. I am addicted to dog shows. For better or worse. I started my dog training business to keep me from owning too many dogs, but I could not stay away from shows. Upon moving to Miami in 2000, I met a local club member in summer of 2001. Next thing I know I am secretary of the club, it took about 3 years, and now I have my own 4 and my mom's 2. And she is getting a puppy in February. I find I don't need to show dogs, I am not competitive, but I do have a clear need to be at shows. So tomorrow I will stewad for Ft Myers. Next weekend I am showing a Pharaoh Hound for her first show, she is 7 months. She was a training client, but I know a future champion in any breed. I have read up on the breed and this kennel. She is so lovely. I hope she likes dog shows. Her owner wanted to show but knows nothing about it. She found me through the apdt.org web site. Now the dog is my grandpuppy. She comes and plays with my dogs and goes home, needing a bath. For better or worse I cannot see me not being at dog shows for some reason and at some point. It is my vacation time. I will be at the January Orlando shows, but not entering, I have no show dogs at this time. I will be there for the vacation. To be with friends to see other dogs besides my own, and to hand out premiums for the shows I am secretary-ing in February. I do the secretary's job for Ft Lauderdale and Miami because I can and because I can enjoy the fun everyone else has coming to "my shows". With the help of my fellow club members we have great shows. We always seem to have judges people want to enter under, and we have gotten bigger and bigger entries every year lately. I just love dog shows. But I think I am sick. sheila Giselda & Art <scotties@xxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: The fun thing about owning a puppy is when they encounter thier first snowfall....it is hilarious. My pup was wondering if it was actually safe to step in it and decided not to go out. Then when my boy went out, she followed.. Of course he loves it when you throw snowballs up in the air for him to catch, but she just wants to run about. It is really funny. So I am wondering about what types of things did the experienced people in showing, encountered when they first started out in dogs...good or bad...and what kind of encouragement, discouragement did they go through??? How did some of you actually get started in dogs? What made you decide on the German Shepherd as opposed to other breeds? Just curious. On a great note tonight, I lost 4.4 pounds at weightwatchers...and I am so happy, down 8.8 pounds now and looking forward to that good turkey dinner at christmas.
