Euthanasia is a poor answer to over population. But at times it is necessary
for a variety of causes. In those cases it is up to the community to make
sure the education is there and the support is there to make certain those
methods are appropriate.
A few years ago, I represented a vet who used as a method to kill animals an
empty infusion bag. He would insert a needle into the vein, and then attach
an empty bag, and crush the bag to introduce an air bubble into the heart to
kill the animal.
He learned this method in Mexico at vet school, and used it on strays that
had been brought to his clinic after being hit by a car, or injured, that he
could not save. He didn't believe the cost of anesthesia was needed, and
that the method worked quickly with no cost to the clinic.
I lost that case, his license was suspended. I understood his position, and
even realized that he was reasonable when he felt that a dog hit by a car,
about to die, should not cost him thirty dollars or so, to put down.
There is no easy answer, and while it sounds wonderful to have no kill
shelters, and keep every animal alive and happy, some times it is just not that
simple.
I have no answers, but I do recognize the questions.
