Well I certainly wouldn't feel qualified to argue with any professor.....but my 
thinking is that
rather than it being "dominant genes"........it is more of a matter of pure 
physics of 
the huge
heavy hanging wider set ear that has been bred into the hounds weighing down 
the 
"prick ear".

Animals in the wild that survive by NATURE  have erect ears for better hearing.
