Happy New Year. The big image on the float was of a coated GSD known as Johnny Cash who is the personal protection dog of the woman who started the foundation that raises money to buy the working dogs for the police. Once she found out that it costs $13000 to train a dog, she started the foundation and has raised enough money now to purchase 18 dogs just for Harris County alone. Sorry, but to me it looks nothing like the Malinois that Iâm seeing used in protection and working dogs up here. That is a great promotion for working dogs. I recorded the parade and played that part back several times to see that there were several live dogs on the float in addition to several handlers with dogs on the side of the float. Regarding the big image of a K9 on the float It looked more to me like a Malinois which explains why he looks the way he does. Regardless, this was a great breed ambassador event for all the K9 working dogs. Eventhough GSDs are classified as Herding dogs, they are most known for their great abilities as Military and Police Enforcement dogs. The Malinois are preferred by the Airborne Military units because or their smaller size -- they are easier to handle when jumping of a plane with a parachute. The Grand Canyon German Shepherd Dog Club, in Phoenix, AZ, marches each year in the local Veteran's day parade to honor the efforts of all military working dogs. We have participants from the 4 most used breeds by the Military: GSDs, Malinois, Dobermans and Labs. Usually we have over 50 participants, including current and veteran dog handlers, local K9 Corps handlers and their dogs. On a side note, an ex-military handler told me, at the last Veterans Day Parade, that while the Malinois are smaller he preferred the GSDs.
